September 9th Will Be Microsoft's Big Day, Too

While a lot of us are excited for the next Apple event on September 9th, that's the same date Microsoft has slated for their "Say Goodbye to Laser" event which, LiveSide has revealed, will feature more than their new mouse. It will also include a new line of LifeCams with 5 times zoom, hi def recording and 8MP stills. Of course, with all that other Microsoft news going on, ars technica thinks it'll be the perfect time to unveil their new Zune products—and we're inclined to agree. So what do you think? Wal-Mart Discountinues 80GB and 4GB Zunes? 120GB Zune Priced?

According to a Wal-Mart insider (OK, employee) the 80GB and 4GB Zune SKUs have both been listed as "NRPL" in Wal-Mart's database—that's retailer shorthand for "non-replenishable." Given Microsoft's recent confirmation of a new 120GB Zune along with some other unnamed goodies, it looks like new Zunes could be coming sooner as opposed to later. Or Wal-Mart has finally found someone to manufacture a Zoon.

Meanwhile, bhphotovideo.com posted a preorder of the Zune 120GB for $250 along with an 8GB Zune in blue. So will the new models hit before or after the Apple event? [Zunerama and Zunerama]

Democrats and Republicans Get Special Edition Zunes For Their Conventions

Microsoft's just slapped together a pair of special edition Zunes for both the Republican and the Democratic National Conventions and they look pretty damn great. The one for the DNC is awarded for the winner of the "Green Delegate Challenge", which is contest for delegations that "demonstrate the highest level of commitment to offsetting their carbon footprint from attending the Convention.". Theirs has a nice looking tree on the back. The RNC's, on the other hand, just has the blurb about environmental stuff as well as the picture of the RNC logo. Oh, and it's red, not green. I've never really understood music subscription services. Despite the conveniences, to date I have never, ever felt the need to lease something that can get imprinted on your heart like only music really can. It needs to be mine. But this week rumors kicked up again regarding an iTunes all-you-can-eat subscription-based model coming as early as September—the same rumors we've heard time and time again. While this time around the whispers are shaky at best, this rumor just won't die, and it's not a complete impossibility that it someday may actually happen. A lifetime iTunes subscription may be the one thing that could change my subscription-hatin' ways (maybe). Is there anyone else with me? Who else doesn't really buy the whole subscription model, and if not, would an all-you-can-eat iTunes change your mind? More »

120GB Zune Makes World Debut Courtesy of FCC

The FCC's test report—found by I Started Something—for an upcoming "Portable Media Device with 120GB Hard Drive" by Microsoft is the 120GB Zune, and was first tested June 19 of this year. What's this mean to you? Not a whole lot, since this Zune is the exact same size and shape as the old one, except with increased storage. It's likely that the 120GB Zune will be the new 80GB Zune later this year, assuming that Microsoft is going to push out another yearly update to their players and software suites. Or, it could just be a new size to go along with the old sizes. [I Started Something]

Could Zune-Exclusive Content Win Back the Zune Guy (Or Anyone)?

Zune Guy says he's leaving the Zune because Microsoft is leaving it to die on the vine (or wherever MP3 players hang). But that's just not true! They're actually verrrry busy poking Hollywood types to get exclusive original video just for the Zune. It's not just any video they're looking for, though, but video that can "capitalize" on its social networking features. I'm not really sure what that is, but I'm going to take a wild swing and guess it's not going to be awesome enough to send sales skyrocketing, unless like, they get South Park to only be available on Zunes or something. Rumor: Nokia Working on Zune Marketplace Integration

Zune Scene's been tipped off by a "well placed source" inside Microsoft that Nokia is working on integrating Zune Marketplace into its phones. What's the deal here? Would Microsoft take what they wanted to be a complete vertical solution—Zune player with Zune Marketplace with Zune software on the PC—and let other people get their hands on it? Perhaps. If the rumor is true, it could point to MS wanting to get as wide a footprint for their Zune platform as possible, even if it does mean integrating the ability to play/watch content on other devices.
